The hardware wing. This is where the lights blink, the switches toggle, and nobody is allowed to argue about operating systems — only about which front panel blinked prettiest.


01The PDP-11 Front Panel

Digital Equipment Corporation’s PDP-11 wore its heart on its front panel: rows of toggle switches and glowing status lights — the original blinkenlights. Programmers flipped switches to key in boot code in octal, by hand, usually at 2 a.m. We salute every finger that ever toggled in a bootloader before coffee.

02MITS Altair 8800

The January 1975 kit that lit the fuse on the microcomputer revolution. The front panel was the whole user interface — switches and LEDs, no keyboard. You talked to it in binary and it blinked back. This very unit (serial #220040K, one of the first hundred sold) once helped researchers study respirators in a neonatal intensive care unit. From saving babies to BASIC — range.

03IMSAI 8080

The Altair’s louder, flashier rival: big paddle switches, brighter LEDs, and a front panel you could practically land a plane by. It lost the sales war but won Hollywood — decades later it was still the go-to “movie hacker” computer. Sometimes the best revenge is a cameo.

04Xerox Alto

1973. A mouse. A graphical interface. Ethernet. An object-oriented operating system. The Alto had the entire future of computing sitting on one desk while the rest of the industry was still arguing about toggle switches. It was never commercially sold, which makes it the most influential computer almost nobody could buy.

05The Blinkenlights Themselves

Every panel above earned its place the same way: by blinking. Behold a loving simulation — no vintage hardware was blinked in the making of this exhibit.

06First PC: Personal Computer Milestones

Before this campus existed, blinkenlights.com was already asking the hard questions — chiefly, “Pop Quiz: What was the first personal computer?” The answer involves Kenbaks, Kitchen Computers, a paperclip computer, and one very patient quizmaster. Preserved in full, dry wit intact.

07Toy Computers: A Playful History

Our newest exhibit: from the 1950 Simon “mechanical brain” through the GENIAC, the Brainiac, Hasbro’s Think-a-Tron, the Minivac 601, and the beloved $5 Digi-Comp I — all the way to a tic-tac-toe machine built from 10,000 Tinkertoys. The kits that taught a generation to think in binary.
